Coach's Social

All coaches are welcome to have a few drinks, rub shoulders with each other and share stories of their season this Thursday at 8 pm at the Village Idiot.
That is right, coach's social Thursday, June 19th at 8 pm at Village Idiot.

Important Information

Hello coaches,
Thanks again for all the time you have put in this season with your players.  Each year we see great progress being made in player's individual and teamwork skills as well as a love for the game of soccer.  

Kendra and Rory will be doing player evaluations this week, so we will not necessarily be available at practices to help you out.  Do ask questions of us if you have them, we will be around.  To help us with player evaluations please USE the practice plans provided this week and make sure you also include both Games at beginning and end of practice.
For mixed games and 11 aside games please arrange amongst yourselves responsibilities (who is coaching, reffing, and keeping track of time).

We also want to hear feedback from you on the season.  We will send out a short survey later this week or early next week but if there are things happening that you would like to see change provide some constructive feedback on a feedback form on the RYSA website.  New ideas are always welcome!

U4/5 Soccer week 8: June 18th

Hi coaches!  This is the last week of soccer!  Please note that Saturday is the wind up.  Please remind parents and players that the schedule is on the RYSA website https://sites.google.com/site/revelstokesoccer/
U4/5's play 3 games from 9-9:55 then have awards after this and snack.  All should be said and done by around 10:30.

Coaches if you can not be at the wind up please ensure YOU have found someone to cover your coaching duties for that morning.  Thank you!

Warm up:
Grid, everyone has a ball except person who is it.
Soccer tag.  All kids dribble around grid.  If person who is it tags you, you freeze and put foot on the ball (legs apart) to become unfrozen someone has to kick a ball through your legs or dribble up and kiss their ball to yours.

Kick the Coach
In your grid the kids try to kick their ball and kick the coach, if they get you they can tell you what animal you will act out until next kid hits them with ball.  :) Have fun!  Can adjust to kick the parent too!

have many cones, pinnies etc...laid out in your grid they need to get to the other side without having a volcano erupt on them (or make the cones whatever you like).....put a goal at the other end and have them shoot when they get through the volcano field.
From here move to topsy turvy.  Have half the cones standing normally and the other half knocked down or upside down.  Split group, half are topsy (they have to stand the cones up), half are turvy (they have to knock them down or put them upside down) all while dribbling a soccer ball around the grid.

Sharks.  Play a game of sharks, british bull dog style....where all kids/fishies with balls have to swim to the other side of the grid to the safety of the reef so the shark won't eat them.  If shark get their ball they become a shark.

Nuts and Squirrels or Rock soccer.  Balls in the middle, teams, one at a time they go into middle to get ball and bring back to house (coned area).  After all balls are gone, they can go and steal from others.

Clean your room.
Divide grid in half, divide kids in half....keep your room clean by kicking balls (laundry, toys, garbage etc...) to other side of grid.

1v1 plus attack
Either play numbers game or call names of two or more people who go and battle it out and try to score on goal.  Ensure kids know which goal they are trying to score on.

Warm up:  pick your favourite tag game.
E.g.  Soccer tag.
Grid.
All have balls, dribbling around (except person who is it can carry their ball and us it to tag (not throw) but tag other players)....if tagged, freeze with foot on ball and legs apart, to be freed, another player must come and pass their ball through legs or dribble up and have their ball kiss the other players ball.

Kick the coach

All kids have a ball and they are trying to hit the coach (or parent) if they hit the coach with a ball (kicked) then that player gets to tell the coach what animal they must act out until they are next hit.


Sharks/Fun Island 
(where if they have their ball taken away by you they become a shark with you) play it British Bull dog style where all the fish have to get to the reef on the other side without the shark getting their ball...if you the shark gets their ball then they become a shark with you.  Fish swim when the sharks call out SHARK!!

Soccer Island/Fun House

In a larger grid (Island) (use your shark grid) create a fun house where they fly to go and do a skill (toe taps, pulls, dribble around a cone, whatever other fun(ny) thing you want them to do in the fun house.
Variation could be when you say fly, they can't be tagged by you the coach.

1v1 attack OR numbers game

wo goals, have half team on each side line, when you call their names they go and challenge a ball that you roll in, each team having a goal they need to score on
You can turn this into more than one on one or run it like the numbers game if you like

Set up a small grid, depending on number of players. Separate players/parents into 2 teams. Number players 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Call out a number. That numbered player/parent combo from each team enters into the field to challenge for the ball. Players try to score on opposing side while defending their own side. Parents and players not called can act as goalies on their side.

Warm Up: 10 minutes
Agility - do your favourite ladder and hurdle activities.

Have each team give up 2 to 3 players to make 4 teams. Play 7 v 7 or 8 v 8.
Use large nets and full field. 
Each game 15 minutes long. Each team plays other teams once (3 games for each team)

Passing -  Passing & Support – Square to Sqaure  
Organization: Divide players into groups of four, Set-up area 20x10m
· One group in possession against one opponent in one 10x10m square.
· One square vacant to begin with.
Coaching Points:
· Accurate passes with good ball speed.
· Open your body to the play when receiving a pass.
· Support in triangles – wide and deep.
· Don’t support too close to the ball. Remember: distance = time.
Description:
1. Two groups compete against one another as follows: Four red players v 1 white player in a one square, with three white players resting outside the square at the halfway line. The coach serves the ball to the red team and they must make at least three passes after which they can pass the ball into the next square for one of the group to run onto. If successful all four red players move into the next square and, again try to get at least three passes and play back into the original square. If the red team is successful the defending white player steps out and a new defender enters the next square attempting to win the ball. If the red team should pass the ball out of bounds, or the defender wins the ball, the coach serves the next ball into the other square to the white players and one of the reds becomes a defender, while the other rest outside the area. Every successful movement from one square to the next = 1 point. First team to 10 points is the winner.
Progression: As above but 3v1 in one square, with fourth player in other square. Switch squares with a pass to the fourth player.

11 vs 11 games this week! Great seeing the players enjoying playing 11 aside soccer two weeks ago. They will have an opportunity to show off their full field skills again. 
Coaches separate players into two equal teams. I find having players stand beside someone of similar ability works well to separate into teams. The main goal of playing 11 aside is having players learning shape (their positions). Don't be afraid to remind them of where they should be and even stop the game to have them adjust their positioning.

Another option is the Gauntlet
Kids love this drill. Have defenders move up in grid after each player goes through the gauntlet. The objective is to see if a player can beat all the defenders and shoot on goalie. U4/5 Week 7 Stations & Crazy Hair Day

Hey coaches, get out your wigs, your hair dye, sprays and gels and get on that crazy lid!!!  It's crazy hair day!
We'll do stations again this week, it will work exactly the same as last week, with groups 1-6 doing a set of stations and groups 7-12 doing a set of stations.  If you have two coaches, have one coach the station and the other take your team around.  If you are solo, find an able parent to herd them to the next station, help with names and help motivate the group.  We will move clockwise at the horn.
The horn will go at 4pm and then every 7-ish minutes after that.  No games this week as there is a scrimmage station built into the event.  Double horn at the end signalling the end of the stations and time to move to snack and don't forget to cheer!!  And most of all have fun!  :)

Station - Pirate Pete   (Josie & Sarra, Teria & Matt)
this is in the Active Start curriculum package

Divide the players into two teams. Put the teams in two different pinnie colors. One team has to run through the channel to get to the treasure (balls). The other team kicks/passes across the channel to partner trying to hit the other team with the ball below the knee as they run through. If players get struck by the ball they have to go back and try again. When players get to treasure (Ball) they bring back a piece back to their ship (they can dribble or carry it depending on their level). Players change roles after a set time. Count the pieces (Balls) each team collects.
Variations Easier (U4): Players can role the ball rather than kick it. Players can carry treasure back in their hands. Parents can help. Harder: Players can shoot the ball. Players can dribble both ways with the ball.



Station  - Red Light, Green light and a whole lot more lights and stuff  (Vanessa & Steph, Olivia & Jesse)

You can just divide the team up and play a mini game (use your pinnies) or get a parent to help and play the numbers game, whichever you would prefer to coach.

Get a parent to help at the squirrel house.  Do a round of dribbling and a round of passing.  You probably only need 3 houses max, feel free to snag nets for each house.
15 x 15 grid - 4 small goals or "hoarding areas/trees" on sides or corners of grid.....all balls (nuts) in middle of grid.  Kids (squirrels) in pairs or 3's depending on numbers in each goal/hoarding area.  Coach shouts "go" players take turns running into the middle and dribbling back a ball back hoarding area (trying to get as many nuts as they can), when there are no balls left in the middle coach yells "steal" or something else appropriate and then they may try and steal nuts from anywhere (other hoarding areas).  No defending the nuts!

Station - Obstacle Course (Blaire & Pat, Shendra & Josiane)
Grab a bunch of fun stuff from the wagon and be creative...have a theme if you want....or just have fun.  You may want to make two obstacle courses, one with balls and one without.

Dig out a few items from the wagon and make yourself an obstacle course...be creative and have fun!
If you want make two and have one be a no balls course and one a with balls course.

U8 - week 7 June 10 & 12

Great job U8 coaches these past few weeks, great enthusiasm and good job getting your kids going right away!

Theme:  Attacking

Warm Up: Dribble grid.  Players spread out in 15X15 grid. Dribbling, toe taps/storks, fancy moves & fakes, tic-tocs, turns etc....
Play a game of shark. Mark each corner with different colored cones. Players dribbling in grid, coaches or players tries to win ball from fish. 20 toe touches or storks if shark attack is successful. To give players an opportunity to work on their offensive skills, when coach yells a specific color players must dribble to that colored corner trying to get past sharks.  Incorporate dynamic stretches within activity as needed (once everyone is in the blue lagoon corner do 20 high knees ..)  Maybe show them a few fancy moves or how to do a fake.

Game:  Play small sided scrimmage but coach attacking.  Add more goals (arches on the end lines to promote more attacking opportunities).


Turn and Burn
Turn and Burn- dribbling with speed
Divide players into two teams – put them in different colored pinnis One team starts on one end of the grid with a ball each. Objective is for players with the ball to dribble towards the players without, who remain stationary. The coach shouts “Turn” and the players with the ball stop, turn and try to dribble back to their starting line. When the players without the ball here the coach shout “Turn” he players without the ball can release and try and steal the balls of the apposing team before they get back over the safe line. Take turns having both teams being attackers/defenders. Do not eliminate players who lose their ball. Let them have another go.
Variations: Introduce specific turns: big toe turn, little toe turn, pull back, etc.

Win ball drill
Two lines, one on either side of the coach a fair distance from the goal.  Coach in middle of two lines with all the balls.  Have front players lie down or face backwards etc....say go and send a ball out and they must win the ball and shoot on net.  Rotate a goalie in.

Game:  Play small sided scrimmage but coach attacking.  We're also going to work on the attacking principal of width and play alley soccer.
Create two alleys on either side of your field
Working on width.  Can not check the allies or go in the allies, only ally players can be in the alley.  If you are short on numbers have one person play in the ally and play to whomever passed them the ball or have a coach in one alley doing this and then two players in the other alley.  In order to try and score the team must complete one pass to the alley

Grid 1v1 attack drill.
Grid, many small goals, attackers in pinnies. Play 1v1 with attackers trying to score on as many small goals as they can in a minute.  If defender wins ball, they get a point.  Change attackers to defender, change partners etc...

1v1 Kings court activity
partners
create enough small grids (all side by side) for each pairing
in grid play 1v1 for a time limit (2 minutes?), with the defender passing to the attacker and attacker trying to score by stopping ball on defenders line.  Have them keep score.  Choose one end to be the kings court (have person that won stay put in this grid) and on the opposite end of your line of grids have the looser stay put.  Have all others move according to if they have won or lost winners move one grid up towards kings court and all losers move down towards the looser (for lack of better word) court.

Have defending line next to goal with balls, they pass out to attacking line and then it's 1v1 with attackers trying to score on goal.  Call dead if defender successfully wins the ball.  Or try the format in the video

Divide team into attackers and defenders. Match an attacker with a defender. Place all players in the 18 yard box. One coach is situated on each side of 18 yard box. They distribute balls into the box and attackers try to create an opportunity to score while the defenders try to get the ball out of 18. Distribute balls to different areas of 18 yard box. Key coaching points: attack the ball, look for shooting opportunities.

Well done last week on 11 vs 11 mixed game. I saw teamwork, much enthusiasm and demonstration of good defending skills.

This week's theme is attacking.

Girls Purple Team (Kurt) practices on Tuesday. Please complete defending session from last week before moving on to attacking session on Thursday.

Boys Blue Team (Tom) practices on Thursday. Please ensure you complete defending and attacking practices this week.

Key points:
Receiving ball:
- create space to receive ball
- time your run
- good first touch 

Attacking with ball:
-attack with speed
-keep ball close
-attack weak side if you know it
-try and catch defender flat footed
-exploit them if too close

Warm Up:
Dribbling Grid - 20 x 30 meter grid. Players dribbling in grid listening to coaches instructions - turn, accelerate, find space etc. Have them practice offensive moves when dribbling, when they approach another player have them do a move to get by them. Players may want to demonstrate some moves to team and then have players practice moves. 

Game:
5 vs 5 focus on players creating opportunities to attack the net. You may want to set up a pop up net and a few hoops that they can score on to create more attacking opportunities.

Technical Team Activities:
Spend some time talking and demonstrating attacking skills. See key coaching points above.
Choose a few of the following activities. I would recommend that players practice at least one 1 vs 1 activity and one 2 vs 1 activity.

Progression to 2 vs 1.
Defender passes to attackers who try to beat defender and dribble across line. You may  want to progress to 3 vs 2. If you have two coaches each coach could take one group each to work with.

Triangle Challenge

Turn and Burn

Turn and Burn- dribbling with speed
Divide players into two teams – put them in different colored pinnis One team starts on one end of the grid with a ball each. Objective is for players with the ball to dribble towards the players without, who remain stationary. The coach shouts “Turn” and the players with the ball stop, turn and try to dribble back to their starting line. When the players without the ball here the coach shout “Turn” he players without the ball can release and try and steal the balls of the apposing team before they get back over the safe line. Take turns having both teams being attackers/defenders. Do not eliminate players who lose their ball. Let them have another go.
Variations: Introduce specific turns: big toe turn, little toe turn, pull back, etc.


1 v 1 attack

Defender positioning:
- defender is goalside (closer to net than attacker)
- direct attacker into area where there is support

Warm Up -
Knees game - 15 x 15 meter grid. Players assume defender's stance in grid and move within grid trying to touch the knees of others. You can protect your knees by moving out of way and by blocking with your own hands. This game gives players practice moving like a defender. They should be shuffling not running. 
Keep Away - 20 X 30 m grid. All players except for two are dribbling within a grid. Those without balls try to win ball from other players and then continue to dribble with grid. When coach stops play the two players without balls must do a challenge.

Two teams. Regular rules. Focus on good defending skills. 

Technical Team Activities: Choose a few of the below drills.
Ensure you spend time demonstrating proper defending stance and positioning. Encourage good defending skills and correct when needed. 
1 vs 1 defending. Players 15 apart. Defender passes ball to attacker who tries to beat defender and dribble to end line.
Progress to 2 vs 1 where defender is trying to prevent two attackers from getting to endline or to get a shot on net.

Progress to calling out more than one number and encourage players on same team to work together to score. . Add a goalkeeper

Note: U 10 girls will be playing mixed games on Thursday. Please do warm up listed in plan below and then choose one of the technical team activities. Spend some time demonstrating defending stance and positioning.
Rory will organize players into groups of 5 or 6 players and then have them play a King's Court style tournament focusing on defending.
